Nadezhda is escorted into the administrative section of the torture center. She is received by the same bald man with unclear ties within the organization who harassed and toyed with Bonn, to ultimately imprison him as a traitor. Now, he lightly nudges Nadezhda in the same way, using the same pictures. Except she’s not beaten, sodomized, or humiliated. She’s merely escorted out of the room to inspect the cell of private Bonn, at which point the chapter comes to an end.
Much later in the story, in the second book in the series, Bluebird, we come to get a more elaborate view of the struggle between factions inside the organization. These struggles are reminiscent of those within any government, but more blatantly echo those of totalitarian regimes, whether fascist or communist, of similar mechanics and different goals, and ultimately the same results.
We come to understand that Nadezhda was probably picked to attack her father. Probably. The fact that she was a promising intelligence officer simply thrown to the wolves makes no sense at all, unless you factor in this vying for power. She was a loyalist and a fanatic of the commandant in any case.
However, there is also the occult interpretation. She is such a good specimen that her sacrifice makes it even more enticing for those making the selection. This goes in line with primitive and rudimentary understandings of occult reality, proper of groups who confuse fetishism with mechanics, and who, still existing in today’s world, feel increasingly cornered as world events pass them by, and they get used by intelligence agencies after which their used up remains are flushed down the drain.
There will be more to comment on as the reader discloses what exactly happens to Nadezhda. For now, it is enough to understand that a cold system of self-styled predators will always end up cannibalizing itself, like a cancer. The fact that there is a commander on top means that he will be able to profit from it for a time, until the vessel that is the mass of sacrificed individuals under him collapses.
Until then, he might take a leap and migrate, out of view and taking with him the energy and dreams of millions, having given the world something to remind him of and keep him in their memories forever, whatever the kind of obsession. Little do Jewish people and the “Never Forget” movement types know that their “anti-Nazi” efforts do little more than give Adolf Hitler immortality. They never stop thinking about him, and he lives on forever enthroned in their memories, fears, and obsessions.
Satan was given life by Catholic obsession. We now have Satanist movements of every stripe, all born from the legends that Catholics fed. Christians initiate a retroactive magic spell by claiming Satanists have always existed, they create an offensive reality by stating that anyone in power must be a Satanist conspiring against them.
They throw themselves into the fire, make their obsessions come true, and harass people, attack human nature to the point that one day, a guy springs up and says, you know what, Satanism doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all.
What does this all tell you? That you build the world around you that you envision and keep pouring your attention and energy into. Nadezhda wanted a life in the torture center to the highest glory of the commandant, the personification of nuclear death, and she got it.
A “compassionate” Christian would probably say, “The bitch now burns in hell, and she deserves it.”
