Rather than a plot, this chapter gives us a snapshot, a concept, a Tarot card, almost, of an important piece in the legendarium of the Iron Gates universe. The picture drawn is that of a darkened room with a vaulting horse in the middle of it, probably with a spotlight over it, sentry guards with their faces hidden behind masks standing all around. On the vaulting horse, a girl is tied with her bottom’s naked flesh exposed. She is beaten with a paddle until the skin and the mind can take no more, and then the flesh is ruined with a thin metallic cane.
The subject in question is Lynx, now given the code name Bluebird by her handlers within the organization. She has been promoted to leader of her group since we last heard of her. This special torture treatment is one of the trials and tribulations that come with the perks she is given. Her reactions during such an ordeal are also the way in which she is judged to be elite material.
While she is being coldly, clinically punished, a voice comes out of the speakers barking a repetitive message, a repetitive command, and when she is about to pass out, she is told there is only one person who can relieve her suffering. We may assume that Bluebird knows the answer. The commandant alone can do so, but the voice says, Bluebird must ask for relief.
The next question is framed thus. She can ask for relief, which only the commandant can give. But she has the option of continuing to suffer as a willing sacrifice to the commandant. What will she choose?
Bluebird chooses to continue suffering for the commandant.
They know now she is the chosen one.
At some point, the CIA invested resources and manpower into covertly researching and developing protocols, materials, and drugs to create such dependencies in a person suitable to such a control, such as Bluebird in the Iron Gates fiction.
Later on, a campaign to blame the victims that appeared to bear the hallmarks of such research on an illusory “Satanism” was started. Actually practicing Satanists, such as those of the Church of Satan, threw their arms up and accused Christians of religious persecution under false claims. The Christians themselves were easy to dupe because they had been conditioned to believe in the word Satan and its responsibility for everything in this world.
The intelligence services behind the whole affair could sit back, put their feet on their respective desks, and enjoy a cigar and whiskey while these two gullible groups tore at each other’s throats while the victims were humiliated, "debunked," and forgotten.
